Abstract

Abstract: This study aims to analyse the dynamics of conflict and conflict management strategies in educational settings, focusing on interactions between teachers at a public junior high school in Makassar City. The specific objectives of this study are to identify the forms and causes of conflict, and to analyse conflict resolution strategies based on Louis R. Pondy's organisational conflict theory and Thomas–Kilmann's conflict management model. This study uses a qualitative approach with a case study type. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation studies. Data analysis was conducted using Miles and Huberman's interactive model, which includes data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that conflicts in the school environment were latent and interpersonal, triggered by differences in views between senior and junior teachers, communication styles, and an imbalance in the division of tasks and responsibilities. The most commonly used conflict management strategies are compromise and accommodation, with the aim of maintaining harmony and stability in working relationships. However, these strategies tend to be short-term because they do not address the root causes of the conflict. In conclusion, effective conflict management in educational institutions requires a more participatory, open, and organisation-learning-oriented approach so that conflicts can be managed constructively and contribute to improving teacher performance and overall education quality.
