Abstract

Abstract: This study aims to review the implementation of the Green School program at primary and secondary education levels by examining school management, curriculum integration, school culture, and their impacts on students’ character development. A Systematic Literature Review (SLR) was conducted following the PRISMA model. Data were collected from accredited national journal articles published between 2010 and 2025 and analyzed using thematic synthesis. The findings indicate that the success of Green School implementation is strongly influenced by participatory and collaborative school leadership, supportive managerial policies, and the consistent integration of environmental values into the curriculum and learning processes. Furthermore, a school culture that promotes environmentally friendly habits, such as waste management, greening activities, and energy conservation, plays a crucial role in shaping students’ environmental character. The availability of simple supporting facilities, including school gardens, hydroponic systems, and waste separation tools, not only strengthens the green culture but also serves as contextual learning media. The implementation of the Green School program positively impacts students’ ecological awareness, responsibility, discipline, intrinsic learning motivation, and pro-environmental behavior. However, most of the reviewed studies remain descriptive in nature and lack robust longitudinal measurements. This indicates the need for further research employing quantitative or mixed-method approaches to evaluate the sustainability and long-term impacts of Green School initiatives on students’ character development and overall educational quality in a more comprehensive manner.
