Abstract

Abstract: Sustainability issues have become a global agenda, demanding a strategic role for the education sector in building pro-environmental awareness and behavior. The Adiwiyata Program is an Indonesian government policy aimed at systematically and sustainably instilling environmental values in educational institutions. However, studies examining the holistic process of school transformation from education to ecological action and the formation of a sustainable school culture are still relatively limited, particularly in the context of Islamic schools (madrasahs). This study aims to analyze in depth the transformation process of MTsN 11 Jombang in implementing the Sustainable Adiwiyata Program to achieve the National Adiwiyata School designation. The study used a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation studies with the madrasah principal, Adiwiyata mentors, teachers, and Adiwiyata cadres. Data analysis was conducted using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldana through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of the study indicate that the transformation of MTsN 11 Jombang took place gradually and systematically through strengthening environmentally conscious madrasah policies, integrating environmental values into the curriculum and learning, developing environmental actions based on the participation of madrasah residents, and providing environmentally friendly facilities and infrastructure. This process was supported by the commitment of the leadership, the active involvement of madrasah residents, and collaboration with external stakeholders. This transformation resulted in the formation of an ecological madrasah culture and increased pro-environmental behavior of students. This study provides empirical and practical contributions in the form of a sustainable Adiwiyata madrasah transformation model that can be replicated in similar educational units.
