Speech Disfluencies of Students Department of German Literature in Freier Vortrag Course

Edy Hidayat

Abstract

Speech disfluency occurs when the speaker rearranges the words, already says something, or the output outcome does not match what the speaker desires to convey. Students in the Freier Vortrag course at the Department of German Literature at the State University of Malang served as research subjects. This study intends to 1) determine the forms of speech disfluency displayed by students and 2) investigate the reasons of the speech disfluency. This study takes a qualitative approach, using Fraundorf's (2008) theory to define the kind of speech disfluency and Clark and Bortfeld's (2001) theory to analyze the reasons behind student speech disfluency. When students present German in the Freier Vortrag course, they demonstrate four categories of speech disfluency. Silent pause (stillen Pausen), filled pause (gefuellte Pausen), repetition (Wiederholung) and correction (korrekturen) are the different sorts. According to the findings of this study, pupils were more speech disfluency in the form of filled pause in 305 times in various video presentations. Lack of preparation presenting topics and language level have an influence on speech disfluency.
