Translation Techniques of German Youth Language Nouns in the Indonesian Subtitle of the Film “Isi & Ossi” by Oliver Kienle

Abstract


This study employs a descriptive qualitative method with a sociolinguistic approach to analyze the use of German youth language nouns and their translation techniques in the Indonesian subtitles of the film Isi & Ossi. The data were collected using a document analysis method based on the film’s transcript and its Indonesian subtitles. The analysis focused on youth-related vocabulary taken from teenage character dialogues in the film. Data filtering was conducted using references such as Digitales Wörterbuch der deutschen Sprache (DWDS), Lexikon der Jugendsprache, and 100% Jugendsprache 2017. The linguistic forms and patterns of the nouns were identified based on the theories of Ehmann (2005) and Henne (1981). To determine the translation techniques, each noun and its Indonesian subtitle were analyzed using bilingual dictionaries and contextual analysis within the dialogue. The comparison between the original and translated expressions was used to identify the translation techniques based on Molina and Albir’s (2002) theory. The findings reveal the characteristics of German youth language nouns and their translation through techniques such as adaptation, modulation, amplification, and reduction.
